"The more we can look underneath a child's behavior to understand it, the more compassion we'll have. Beneath every behavior, there is a feeling. And beneath each feeling is a need. And when we meet that need rather than focus on the behavior, we begin to deal with the cause, not the symptom." — Ashleigh Warner

What a Parent Coach Does
Identifies Patterns:
Helps parents recognize patterns from their own upbringing and family dynamics that might influence their parenting.
Provides Education:
Offers psychoeducation about child development and behavioral challenges, teaching parents evidence-based strategies.
Develops Skills:
Guides parents in learning new skills, such as positive reinforcement, emotional coaching, and effective communication.
Fosters Connection:
Focuses on strengthening the parent-child bond by promoting connection, cooperation, and empathy.
Offers a Neutral Perspective:
Acts as an objective witness and ally, providing a different viewpoint and support during challenging times.
Focuses on Solutions:
Concentrates on current, specific actions parents can take to influence a child's behavior, rather than delving into past issues.
"When a child is upset, logic often won't work until we have responded to the right brain's emotional needs."
— Dr. Dan Siegel
How Parent Coaching Works
Collaborative Approach:
Parents work as a team with the coach, who is an expert in strategies and evidence-based techniques.
Individualized Strategies:
The coach helps create personalized action plans and goals tailored to the family's needs and values.
Focus on Parent Behavior:
The primary goal is to shift the parent's behavior and responses, which in turn leads to changes in the child's behavior.
Delivery Methods:
Sessions can be conducted in person, online, or over the phone, with both parents participating together or separately.
Empowerment:
The process aims to empower parents, giving them the tools and confidence to become the parents they want to be.
COMMON QUESTIONS
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Washington, and a Master of Arts and Doctorate of Psychology in Marriage and Family Therapy from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University. My experience spans multiple schools, non-profits, and county mental health programs, where I've provided support to individuals, couples, and families across all age groups, from toddlers to older adults.
In my personal life, I am a mother to two boys and am surrounded by a large extended family and friends. My passion for working with children has been lifelong. In 2022, I founded Anchor Coaching to offer approachable, skills-focused, and non-judgmental support to individuals in my community.
That depends entirely on your family's needs. Most often, I meet weekly or every other week.
I offer a complimentary 30-minute online consultation for those interested in coaching services. I will send a meeting request via Google Calendars including a Google Meet link (a free to use and end-to-end encrypted service). I will introduce myself and my approach and ask about your needs to ensure that we will be a good fit to work together. I encourage you to ask any questions you might have, as you are also determining if I am the right person to help your family.
Should we decide to work together, I will send you the necessary paperwork. We will then collaboratively establish goals, determine meeting frequency, and decide whether our sessions will be online or in-person.
The approach is tailored to your family's specific needs. In some instances, sessions may be conducted exclusively with parents, while in others, the focus may be solely on children, pre-teens, teenagers, or young adults. Frequently, a blended approach incorporating all these options is adopted, with the decision made collaboratively.
No, you absolutely do not need to live in Washington to participate in our coaching sessions. Our services are designed to be accessible and beneficial to individuals no matter where they are located. You can participate in coaching from anywhere in the world!
A coach partners with clients to identify and achieve personal and professional goals, fostering growth and maximizing potential. Unlike therapy, which often focuses on healing past wounds, coaching is forward-looking and action-oriented. It centers on helping individuals clarify their vision, overcome obstacles, and develop strategies to create the life they desire. Therapists diagnose and offer treatment based on that diagnosis and corresponding symptoms. Coaches work collaboratively with their clients to set goals and focus on what is most important to the clients.

People seek coaching for a variety of reasons. Some may desire guidance on parenting resources, such as book recommendations or strategies for managing tantrums and childhood fears. Others might want to help their children develop specific skills like emotion regulation, social competence, or self-esteem. Still, others may feel stuck, not meeting criteria for a mental health diagnosis but seeking positive life changes and unsure how to begin. If any of these resonate with you, coaching may be a beneficial path forward.
